CES 2026: Aqara reveals U400 smart lock with touchless opening

Aqara Aqara unveiled the Smart Lock U400 smart door lock at CES, which automatically opens when the owner approaches thanks to a combination of Apple Home Key and an Ultra-Wideband radio module.

The new product uses Apple Home Key technology in conjunction with UWB radio for contactless door unlocking. If a user approaches the entrance with an iPhone in their pocket or Apple Watch on their wrist, the lock opens automatically – without touching the deadbolt or launching an app. Support for devices from other ecosystems is announced for the future.

The feature requires not only a UWB module in the lock itself, but also support for Matter-over-Thread. A Matter-over-Thread controller, such as an Apple TV or HomePod, must be present on the home network. They are the ones that enable the Apple Home Key to work correctly in conjunction with the lock.

UWB radio in the Aqara U400 detects the user’s position to within a centimeter. The lock measures the time the radio signal travels between the device and the lock, as well as the direction of arrival. This makes it possible to distinguish a person approaching the door from the outside from someone who is just passing by or inside the house. Aqara claims this approach eliminates false positives.

The company emphasizes that using UWB improves security. The technology is more resistant to relay attacks compared to Bluetooth-only systems. A built-in gyroscope automatically locks the door after it’s closed, reducing the risk of leaving your home unlocked.

Power is provided by a rechargeable 7.3V lithium-ion battery that lasts about six months of use under normal use. In the event of a complete discharge, the lock can be temporarily powered via USB-C – from a smartphone or external battery – to open the door in an emergency.

Besides the Apple Home Key, the Smart Lock U400 supports multiple access methods. Users can open the door using the Aqara app for iOS and Android, a PIN code, the built-in fingerprint scanner, or a regular mechanical key. NFC opening is also available, using a smartphone or Aqara branded card.

Ecosystem Support and Compatibility

Aqara says the lock will gain device support with Samsung Wallet in the first quarter of 2026, expanding the list of compatible smartphones. Already, the U400 works with Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings and Siri voice assistants.

The lock uses a standard 60/70mm deadbolt and fits doors from 35 to 55mm thick, making it compatible with most residential doors in the US. The exterior panel with keypad is IP65 rated, providing protection from dust and water jets.
