Tools to allow third-party apps to support satellite connections are in the works, as well as an updated version of Apple Maps that will be able to provide navigation without the need for a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. There are also plans to add the ability to send photos via satellite, as well as expanded support for “natural use,” which will allow users to connect to satellites even when the phone isn’t pointed directly at the sky, greatly enhancing usability in challenging or remote environments.
These features will greatly improve the iPhone experience for those outside of cellular coverage, such as in remote areas or while traveling. There are also plans to develop fifth-generation (5G) networks to enable connectivity to satellites to extend coverage. This approach will potentially improve call quality and provide more stable connectivity in hard-to-reach places.
