After 20 years, the forgotten classic Metroidvania is finally making a comeback

After 20 years since its last appearance and more than four decades since the first game was released, one classic game returns in the form of a brand new Metroidvania.

What’s the first game that comes to your mind when you hear the word «classic»? If you go back to the PC heyday of the early to mid-90s, Civilization, SimCity, Fallout, Doom and Myst come to mind. Over the past decade, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3 have become some of the biggest modern hits. Some games’ legacies remain forever. Others are lost to time. There is a third category — games you may not have thought of in many, many years, but it’s worth resurfacing as they evoke a sudden wave of nostalgia. One such classic game, released in 1982 and given an underrated sequel in 2005, is back in the form of a new Metroidvania, which you’ll be able to play soon.

Depending on who’s reading this, the following words will elicit a variety of reactions: Yars’ Revenge. If you’re a lifelong video game fan and perhaps a bit of a historian, the mention of Howard Scott Warshaw’s 1982 shooter is likely to evoke vivid memories of a fast-paced, highly complex, galactic battle to the death. For the uninitiated, Yars was one of the games of the ’80s, so popular that 23 years later it had a sequel — Yars’ Return. And now Yars is experiencing a new comeback, becoming a Metroidvania game with a stunning art style, tons of energy and completely redesigned mechanics and level design. This is Yars Rising, the magnificent return of a gaming legend.

Developed by WayForward, Yars Rising — is a complete reimagining of the series and its world. You play as a young hacker, Emi Kimura, who is hired to infiltrate and destroy a shadowy corporation. Sneak, fight, run, jump and gradually earn improvements as you progress through a challenging, modern platformer with a serious patina of retro. It’s the legacy of the Yars universe, but with a whole new approach. We’re still waiting for a full release date for Yars Rising, but it’s expected to launch in 2024.
