Instagram* has released the Edits video editor, a free alternative to CapCut

After a two-month delay, Meta* has finally launched its own video editor, Edits, aimed at creators of short videos. It was originally promised to be released back in February, but now the app is available for download on the App Store and Google Play. The new tool competes directly with CapCut and offers a full suite of content creation features – for free.
The Edits app was introduced in January as a response to the growing popularity of TikTok and a possible ban of the platform in the US. It’s aimed primarily at Reels authors on Instagram*, but it also makes it easy to export clips to other platforms as well.
Meta* actually takes a page from TikTok’s methodology: Edits combines powerful editing tools, a user-friendly interface, and analytics to make the process of shooting and publishing short videos as easy as possible.
What Edits can do
- Capture video with the built-in camera (up to 10 minutes in length)
- Edit with single-frame accuracy
- Manage shooting parameters: resolution, frame rate, dynamic range, advanced flash and zoom settings
- Animation of images with AI
- Background change using chromakey and video overlay
- Expanded set of fonts, sound and voice effects, filters, stickers
- Audio cleanup: remove background noise and improve voice clarity
- Automatic subtitle generation with the possibility of customization
For Reels creators, detailed analytics data is provided to help analyze content performance and plan next steps.
Unlike CapCut, where some features are subscription-only, Edits offers all tools for free, making it especially attractive to aspiring writers and professionals who don’t want to overpay.
* Owned by Meta, it is recognized as an extremist organization in the Russian Federation and its activities are banned.
