Last year, Google released its first smartwatch, and while it was promising, there were some flaws. Now it’s time for the second — we have the new Google Pixel Watch 2 in front of us. They look the same, but it also applies to the new Pixel 8 series. In fact, it would be more correct to say that the hardware looks the same, as the new Wear OS 4 brings some serious visual updates.

The original Pixel Watch was released with an outdated Exynos 9110 processor. While this 10-nanometer chip provided adequate UI speed, it wasn’t efficient. In the second-generation watch, it’s been replaced by the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1, again paired with 2GB of RAM (which is plenty for a watch).

Of course, the Pixel Watch has a Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 processor.

This 4nm chip should fix the low battery life problem of the first watch. The new watch’s battery is no bigger —306 mAh. Google promises 24 hours of battery life, even with Always On Display mode turned on. The watch charges relatively quickly, too: 30 minutes on the charger is enough for 12 hours of runtime.

The new watch is also relatively quick to charge.

As said, the look of the device is identical to last year’s model. Google is sticking to its decision to release only one size, and it’s a small 41-millimeter size. However, there are some subtle changes, such as a stronger protective glass or the fact that the watch uses 100 percent recycled aluminum.

The display is a round 1.2-inch OLED display with a resolution of 384 x 384px — this is a lower resolution compared to the 450 x 450 of the original watch. In any case, the new dials offer great variety and balance legibility and information density.

Like its predecessor, the Pixel Watch 2 features optical sensors for heart rate and blood oxygen content. However, the new multi-track sensor is 40 percent more accurate than the old single-track sensor during intense physical activity because it measures heart rate at multiple points on the wrist.

The watch also tracks stress levels with a continuous electrodermal activity sensor. It can provide a detailed report on sleep quality, which now includes skin temperature measurements. However, Google has yet to join the ranks of its ECG rivals, unlike Apple and Samsung.

The watch comes with a 6-month Fitbit Premium subscription, which now uses artificial intelligence to analyze current results and explain why they’re better or worse than before. This takes into account all the data collected by the watch, so the reason you didn’t run as fast today could be due to poor sleep over the past few days. The watch also has a new coach function to help you maintain your pace and keep your heart rate in your target zone.

The Google Pixel Watch 2 is available now with prices starting at $350 for the Bluetooth model (the same price as the original). An LTE variant will also be available, priced at $400.

An LTE variant will be available as well.
