The base 2026 iPad could get the biggest update in years

The base 2026 iPad could get the biggest update in years

A new leak suggests that the launch model of the iPad could finally get a major performance boost. The 12th-generation iPad, due out in 2026, is expected to be significantly closer in features to the iPad Air.

According to information published by MacWorld, Apple plans to equip the base iPad with an A19 chip built using a 3nm process — the same chip found in standard versions of the iPhone 17. By comparison, the current 11th-generation iPad uses the A16 Bionic, created on a 4nm process, so the transition will be quite noticeable. In addition, the leak says that RAM will be increased from 6GB to 8GB. That in itself could open up access to advanced AI features that are currently only available on the iPad Air and iPad Pro.

The amount of built-in storage is likely to remain the same, as Apple has already increased it in the 2025 model. But the new tablet should get Apple’s N1 wireless module with Wi-Fi 7 support, which would make the base model more modern and bring it closer to the iPad Air’s level of networking capabilities.

iPad (2025) came out in March, so the 12th-generation iPad is logical to expect around the same time in 2026. However, ongoing memory shortages could cause the release to be delayed. Rising memory prices could also cause the device to become more expensive.

If the leak is confirmed, the iPad 2026 will be one of the most significant updates to the base lineup in a long time: a faster processor, increased RAM and modern wireless standards — all without having to upgrade to the Air or Pro lines. For buyers looking for an affordable but relevant tablet, the 12th-generation model may be the best option.
