iOS 18.4 introduces RCS support for Google Fi subscribers

Apple has released a new beta version of iOS 18.4, and one of the key new features is the addition of RCS support for Google Fi users. iPhone owners using Google’s virtual carrier have been waiting for this enhancement since last September.

And it’s an improvement that’s been in the works since last year.

Now, in iOS 18.4 beta 2 iOS 18.4 beta 2 subscribers Google Fi under “Settings” > “Apps” > “Messages” there’s now a switch RCS Messaging. The activation process may take some time – at first the system displays the status “Waiting for activation…”

Expanding RCS to new networks

Besides Google Fi, iOS 18.4 appears to be expanding support RCS for virtualized network operators (MVNOs) running on the T-Mobile network in the U.S.

When iOS 18 was released in September, RCS messaging was only available to customers of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Later, Apple gradually added support for other providers with interim updates.

When to expect a stable release of iOS 18.4?

The final version of iOS 18.4 is expected in April. A few more beta updates will be released in the coming weeks, which may bring additional changes. Those interested can join the beta program Apple’s beta program now to test out the new features.
