The updated Opel Astra is presented
Despite the dominance of SUVs on European roads, compact hatchbacks continue to retain their appeal. Opel is well aware of the importance of this class, which is why the sixth generation Opel Astra, introduced in 2021, has received a mid-life update. The aim — to strengthen the model’s position against the backdrop of the growing popularity of crossovers and competition within its own lineup.
At the same time, the Astra has been updated to include a new generation of compact hatchbacks.
The main changes are centered on the front of the car. The Astra now has a more distinctive design with a new light signature. The signature Opel Vizor grille gets extended LED elements framing the illuminated Opel Blitz logo. The company calls this new style «Opel Compass» — and it will form the basis for future models. The front bumper has also been redesigned: between the air intakes there is now a glossy black element that makes the car’s look more sporty and modern. The profile and stern have changed minimally, but new 17- and 18-inch wheels give the updated Astra a fresh and premium look.

The lineup still includes two body types: a five-door hatchback and a Sports Tourer station wagon. The Astra continues to compete in one of Europe’s most challenging segments — against the VW Golf, VW ID.3 and Peugeot e-308. In the station wagon category, the Sports Tourer competes with the Peugeot 308 SW, Toyota Corolla Touring Sports and Skoda Octavia Combi, appealing to buyers who want roominess without switching to an SUV.
The cabin has received improvements aimed at comfort and convenience. The Intelli-Seats seats, known for their comfort, are now available in all trims, not just the expensive versions. They’re upholstered in recycled ReNewKnit material, with optional multi-stage heating, electro-pneumatic lumbar support, massage and memory settings.
The dashboard retains the dual 10-inch display, but the interface is now «cleaner and more intuitive» reducing distractions while driving.
The electric version of the Astra Electric has also received important updates. A 115kW (154bhp) electric motor is paired with a larger 58kWh battery. This adds 34 kilometers to the range — it is now 454 kilometers. The model has also been given the V2L function, which allows the car’s battery to be used to power external devices — such as electric bicycles or power tools.

The updated Opel Astra enters a market where competition remains high. The Ford Focus and Renault Megane have left the segment, but strong rivals — the VW Golf, Peugeot 308, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30 — are still in line. The restyled Astra will premiere on January 9 at the Brussels Motor Show. Pricing and market details will be announced closer to the European sales launch.
