Google is discontinuing support for Android 12 and 12L

Google has officially stopped releasing security updates for Android 12 and 12L – support for these versions ended on March 31, 2025. This is an important change for users who are still using devices running these versions of Android, as they are now left without critical patches and more vulnerable to new threats.

Information about the end of support appeared in the April 2025 Android Security Bulletin. While Google didn’t explicitly announce the move, the document makes no mention of Android 12 and 12L, and makes it clear that the March bulletin was the last one with updates for those systems. Android 12 was released in October 2021 and 12L in March 2022, and the 3.5 years of support is in line with Google’s standard practice.

Statistically speaking, however, a significant portion of Android users are still using these versions, so the news could affect millions of devices around the world.

Android 12

If your device is running Android 12 or 12L, it won’t be getting new security updates now. Some system components and Google apps may continue to be updated, but the foundation of the OS will remain unprotected. Additionally, Google has a long history of not approving new builds based on Android 12, so don’t expect even minor improvements.

If you use an Android 12 phone as your primary device – with personal data, banking apps and other important information – you should seriously consider upgrading to a more modern and secure version. Alternatively, you can use your old device as a media player, a child’s tablet, or a home camera, but not as your primary means of communication and storage of sensitive data.
