Huawei could overtake Apple in the foldable tablet race

If you blink, you lose, and Apple appears to be blinking again. The company that once changed the world of smartphones with the release of the first iPhone has clearly lost the foldable device race.

It’s only now that Apple has reportedly decided to enter the foldable phone market. As previously reported, Tim Cook and team are preparing to release the first foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch in 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 series. But plans for a large foldable iPad have been put on hold due to high costs and limited demand.

Virtually all major brands have been releasing foldable smartphones for years, but the foldable tablet market remains underexplored. There’s the Huawei MateBook Fold, for example, with a 13-inch screen that unfolds into an 18-inch display, but technically, it’s a laptop.

Apple could pioneer the foldable tablet market. Imagine a foldable iPad mini – it would be even more portable than the current version. The iPad mini is a powerful but compact and lightweight device that’s easy to carry around, which is what makes it so popular. Now imagine folding it in half and slipping it into a pants pocket.

Or, for example, the foldable iPad Air is powerful enough for most tasks, yet lightweight and comfortable for everyday use. It offers modern features without being overpriced, and if it folded up too, that’d be a great bonus.

In the meantime, rumors have surfaced that Huawei is working on a foldable tablet. Details are scarce, no specs or images, but it wouldn’t be surprising if we see an official announcement of Huawei’s new foldable tablet in a few months.

2 1

Foldable tablets seem promising: they combine the benefits of a large display with the convenience of a compact form factor that fits easily into a bag or even a large pocket. That makes them ideal for those who want to comfortably watch videos, read, work on documents, and multitask.

So Apple probably won’t be the first company to release a foldable tablet. That said, many users are unlikely to be interested in a device from Huawei, even if it comes out much sooner. Many still remain loyal to Apple, regardless of how long it takes the company to release a novelty. Before the sanctions, Huawei was gaining serious popularity and, in the view of some, could threaten the iPhone’s lead.
