CES 2024: Whole-house battery backup for less than $5,000

The Haven system from Goal Zero only requires a couple hours of electrician time to install.
Home backup power systems can be a huge help during a power outage. But they’re expensive. From $10,000 and up. At CES 2024, I checked out a system that, if not exactly cheap, is at least more affordable.
At CES 2024, I checked out a system that, if not exactly cheap, is at least more affordable.
This is a system from Goal Zero, a company that has been making portable power plants for a while now. The system, dubbed the Haven home battery system, combines a 4-kilowatt-hour Yeti Pro power station with a switch that can power up to 10 electrical circuits in your home.
The system is from Goal Zero, which has a long history of making portable battery systems.
In the Goal Zero booth, several circuits were set up, and CEO Bill Harmon simulated a power outage. When he threw the lever to unplug the battery, the only thing that went out — was the light that was off at the switch. The battery system itself changed only slightly: The display showing power consumption dropped to zero, and the countdown timer read: «Discharged in 44 hours». (Don’t expect it to run the whole house for 44 hours — it only consumed 232 watts, which isn’t that much.)
And then it went to zero.
