ChatGPT has introduced Study Mode, a step-by-step mode for learning anything

OpenAI has introduced Study Mode, a new mode in ChatGPT that helps you learn complex topics and solve problems step-by-step. The feature is already available to all users, on both free and paid plans, including ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Team. In the coming weeks, Study Mode will also be available in the ChatGPT Edu version.

Instead of ready-made answers, there’s a step-by-step explanation

Education is one of the most popular use cases for ChatGPT. Users are learning languages, studying for exams, and asking for explanations of formulas, logic problems, and scientific concepts. The new mode is designed specifically for this purpose – it turns the model into a digital tutor that doesn’t give you a ready-made answer, but helps you get to it yourself.

A new mode is designed to help users learn languages, prepare for exams, explain formulas, logic problems, and scientific concepts.

In the process, ChatGPT asks leading questions, assesses knowledge, offers hints, and guides the user – just like an experienced teacher. Study Mode also allows for self-testing, with quizzes, open-ended questions, and feedback on each step. The material is organized into blocks, making it easy to grasp even complex topics.

The new interaction format is based on research in cognitive science and pedagogy. Teachers, methodologists, and education experts worked on it. As Robbie Torney, senior director of AI programs at Common Sense Media, notes, “rather than doing the work for the student, the mode encourages critical thinking and meaningful comprehension of the material.”

  • Interactive prompts: the chat is based on the principle of Socratic dialog with questions, prompts and reflection.
  • Step-by-step answers: topics are presented in a structured way, emphasizing key connections and without overload.
  • Personalization: the level of difficulty is tailored to the user – based on input questions and previous sessions.
  • Knowledge Verification: built-in tests and answer parsing help consolidate understanding and track progress.
  • Flexibility: mode can be turned on and off at any time.

Digital tutor that doesn’t get tired

The mode is aimed primarily at students. According to test takers, Study Mode replaces tutor consultations and helps them understand even the most difficult topics.

Some of the students who use Study Mode say it’s a great way to help them understand the most difficult topics.

For example, student Maggie Wang said she was finally able to understand sine wave position coding, a topic she had tried to master before without success. After three hours with ChatGPT in Study Mode, she felt confident in her knowledge.
