Background activity, an unoptimized app, and a bug in iOS 17
are to blame.
The statement notes that the overheating is due to extra work customizing the iPhone. Apple said: «We have identified several conditions where the iPhone may discharge faster than expected. In the first few days after the device is customized or restored, it may heat up due to increased background activity».
Apple said.

It’s nothing new that the new iPhone is heating up a bit when you set it up, but the iPhone 15 Pro models seem to be heating up more than regular iPhones. Apple attributes the heating to a bug in iOS 17, as well as unoptimized apps.
«We’ve also discovered a bug in iOS 17 that affects some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue is related to recent updates to third-party apps that are causing system overload. We are working with the developers of these apps on fixes that are in the process of being rolled out».

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg also reported that Instagram, Uber and Asphalt 9 are among the apps causing the iPhone 15 Pro to overheat, according to a spokesperson.
Hopefully, the problem is software in nature and fixing it won’t result in performance degradation. Forbes reports that the fix likely won’t affect performance, but we’ll have to wait for it to become available to be sure. For now, Apple has said that overheating does not pose a security risk and will not affect the iPhone 15 Pro’s performance in the long term.
