Apple will release a successor to the Studio Display in early 2026

Apple is preparing to release a new external monitor, the successor to the Studio Display. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device is scheduled for release in early 2026, in sync with the launch of the new Macs powered by M5 chips.

New code and possible name change

The monitor’s internal designation is J427. That said, Gurman’s latest report doesn’t mention the familiar Studio Display name, which could indicate a branding change or significant product change.

Earlier this year, Gurman also reported a second project with the code J527, which could indicate the development of two different models – for example, an updated Studio Display and a new Pro Display XDR.

Mini-LED features

Separately, analyst Ross Young of DSCC claims that Apple is working on a new 27-inch display with mini-LED backlighting. Such a panel would offer higher brightness and contrast than the current LED-matrix Studio Display. It predicts the model could come out in late 2025 or early 2026.

What’s known about the current model

The original Apple Studio Display came out in March 2022. It features a 27-inch panel with 5K resolution (5120×2880 pixels), 60Hz refresh rate, and up to 600 nits of brightness. The device also features a built-in camera, microphones, speakers, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports.
