Mozilla closes Pocket and Fakespot for the sake of Firefox development

The Pocket service, which lets you save articles, videos and web pages for later viewing, is no longer available for download as of May 23. The ability to subscribe to Pocket Premium is also closed. The complete shutdown of the service is scheduled for July 8, 2025. Until October 8, users will be able to export their data – after that date, all information will be irretrievably deleted.

Monthly and annual Pocket Premium subscriptions will be canceled automatically. Annual subscription holders will receive a refund after July 8. Access to the Pocket API will be closed as of October 8, 2025.

The second service to be discontinued is Fakespot, a platform for verifying the validity of online reviews. It was acquired by Mozilla two years ago, but the company said it didn’t fit a sustainable business model. Fakespot’s extensions, mobile apps, and website will be shut down on July 1, 2025, and the Review Checker feature in Firefox will be shut down on June 10.

Mozilla attributed the decision to changes in user habits, “The way we save and consume content online has evolved.” The company intends to focus its efforts on Firefox and new projects that better fit today’s browser usage scenarios.

Mozilla explained the decision by saying, “The way we save content on the web has evolved.”

Despite Pocket having more than 10 million users, Mozilla is prioritizing the development of its flagship product. As alternatives to Pocket, users can consider services such as Wallabag and Raindrop.io.
