Apple has confirmed that the Apple Intelligence suite of artificial intelligence features, launched today, will be available in the European Union in April 2025. The EU launch was originally expected to coincide with the global release, which took place today, but the release for iPhone and iPad was delayed due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) – macOS was not affected.

The Digital Markets Act, which was passed in the European Union to limit the monopolies of large tech companies, has delayed the launch of Apple Intelligence in the region. However, as confirmed by Apple representatives, the delay only affects the iPhone and iPad software, while macOS users in the EU can already start using Apple Intelligence on compatible devices from today. In other markets, a suite of AI options, including Writing Tools and AI-based notification summaries, are available for English-speaking users.

Apple also clarified launch dates for other languages: Apple Intelligence will gradually support Chinese, Korean, French, Japanese, English (India), English (Singapore), Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German and Vietnamese. In December, Apple Intelligence will be available for English-speaking users in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Stages of Apple Intelligence launch: what’s available now and what’s coming in the future

The Apple Intelligence feature pack is slowly rolling out, with Writing Tools, live transcripts, notification summaries, and other features becoming available today in iOS 18.1 (outside of the EU). The iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2 updates, scheduled for release in December, will add features such as ChatGPT integration, Genmoji, Visual Intelligence, and Image Playground. These features are still in the beta testing phase.

But to use Apple Intelligence, you’ll need a compatible device. On the iPhone, that’s the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 series. iPad and Mac devices based on M-series processors are also supported, as well as the new seventh-generation iPad mini.

The impact of Apple Intelligence’s launch in the EU

The launch of Apple Intelligence for EU on macOS today is an important step, and in April we’ll see how the arrival of AI features for iOS will change the way Apple Intelligence works in Europe and what impact the DMA will have on AI development in the region. For now, macOS users in the EU can update their devices to Sequoia 15.1 to get familiar with Apple Intelligence.
