Chinese auto giant Geely Auto Group has opened a new facility in Hangzhou Bay area, Zhejiang province. The facility has already been touted as the largest and most technologically advanced automotive safety testing center in the world. It’s not just a crash test site &#8212 the project reflects the company’s new approach to vehicle safety, especially for next-generation electric vehicles.

The new facility is also the largest and most technologically advanced automotive safety test center in the world.

Geely has invested more than 2 billion yuan, equivalent to about 248 million euros, in the creation of the center. The complex has a total area of 45,000 square meters, but its key value lies in redefining the very notion of «safety» itself. The company calls its concept «Comprehensive Security 2.0».

This approach goes beyond protecting passengers in high-speed crashes. It aims to achieve zero fatalities, zero injuries, zero property damage and zero personal data leaks in four areas. As part of this vision, the center is also tackling new challenges such as vehicle cybersecurity, driver data protection and cabin air quality monitoring.

The scale of the facility is truly record-breaking. Geely’s new center has set five Guinness World Records at once. The main automotive safety laboratory occupies almost 82,000 square meters — that’s more than ten soccer fields. Inside, the world’s longest indoor crash test track is more than 293 meters long.

The complex also includes a giant 28,536-square-meter climatic wind tunnel. It is capable of generating air currents at speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour while simulating challenging weather conditions &#8212 snow, rain or intense sunlight.

The strong focus on safety at Geely has a lot to do with its long-standing partnership with Volvo. The company launched its first car in 2002, and that’s when founder Li Shufu thought about buying the legendary Swedish brand from Ford. Three years later, he was even denied a visa to attend the Frankfurt Motor Show, and five years later, in 2010, Geely bought Volvo.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the new center, Geely conducted a public crash test during the opening ceremony, pushing two Lynk & Co 900 cars. The facility specializes in a wide range of areas: simulation of driver assistance systems, pedestrian protection, and sophisticated network and software vehicle safety testing. In total, the center allows for 27 different types of tests. Among the unique units — the «Golden Nose» team, which is dedicated to detecting harmful substances, odors and volatile compounds inside vehicles.

So far, the center has been able to provide a wide range of testing services, including the «Golden Nose» team.

Geely also confirmed that the center will be open to the entire automotive industry. The company plans to collaborate with organizations such as CATARC and Tsinghua University to raise global safety standards. In this way, Geely emphasizes that safety — is a shared responsibility and sets a benchmark for how automakers should approach creating safer and smarter electric vehicles.
