The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) has adopted a national standard for the Internet of Things LoRaWAN protocol. This standard is designed for communication between various smart devices and aims to unify the technical requirements of sensor manufacturers with the capabilities of the technical network provided by telecom operators.

LoRaWAN is one of the popular wireless technology protocols for communication between Internet of Things devices. Rosstandart noted that this standard can be used in state, municipal and commercial procurements, as well as in writing technical documentation, procurement documentation and technical specifications. Approval of this standard as a GOST can contribute to the development of domestic manufacturers and developers in the field of smart homes and wearable devices.

The LoRaWAN national standard is set to come into force on July 1, 2024. This standard will be able to be used to exchange data with household and industrial equipment, including various electronic devices, sensors, seals in the field of construction and housing, transportation, logistics and wearable devices. It is noted that this standard takes into account the specifics of Russian legislation and at the same time is compatible with the global LoRaWAN standard, which will allow domestic developers to enter international markets.

According to available information, some companies have already started working with the Russian version of the protocol. For example, ER-Telecom Holding uses the LoRaWAN protocol in its network with support for more than 2 million sensors in 54 Russian cities, and Rostelecom has several tens of thousands of meters connected to the Klyuch platform using LoRaWAN.
