Mobile Internet is being shut down in Russia en masse – services don’t work, banks warn of failures

Since the morning of May 7, dozens of Russian regions have been experiencing internet and mobile outages. Users are complaining about the inability to order a cab, pay for purchases, or log into banking apps. According to sources and social media reports, communications have been completely cut off in more than 30 cities. The problems affect all operators: MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, T2, T-Mobile and others.
What’s going on May 7
Mobile phone and internet outages have started to be reported in Moscow in the morning. Cab and delivery apps don’t work, ATMs are inaccessible, and stores are increasingly asking for cash. Sberbank is already sending out warnings to customers about possible problems with access to the app and online services.
In addition to technical problems, there are restrictions on movement and work of establishments in the capital: from 22:00 on May 6 to 14:00 on May 7, all cafes and stores along the route of military equipment for the Victory Parade are closed. The restrictions are expected to be repeated on May 9.

Mass blackouts across the country
The disruptions have affected not only the capital. Users are reporting problems with mobile internet in Voronezh, Taganrog, Yaroslavl, Tula, Saransk, Orel, Dzerzhinsk and a number of other cities. Disconnections are also confirmed from Yaroslavl, Tver, Nizhny Novgorod, Kaluga, Kursk and Leningrad regions.

According to local reports and data from Telegram chats and channels, communications are down completely in some regions. Operators and banks warn of possible outages from May 7 to May 9. Many services, including online banking, delivery, cabs, etc., are unstable or not running at all.
Why is the internet being cut off?
Internet and communications blackouts are not officially commented on, but Duma deputy Anton Nemkin said earlier that such measures may be taken for “preventive defense” – to prevent possible attacks using drones, including those controlled via mobile networks.

It’s possible that the shutdowns will extend beyond the holidays. Social networks are discussing the likelihood of extended restrictions in a number of regions – especially near major cities and strategic sites.
