Honor to raise tablet prices due to rising memory costs

Honor has officially confirmed an imminent price increase for its tablets. The reason was the ongoing global wave of rising memory and storage chip costs. Earlier, Xiaomi had already made a similar move in the Chinese market.

The CEO of Honor’s tablet and IoT division said in a statement via Weibo that the manufacturer can no longer absorb the skyrocketing costs of key components. He advised consumers planning to buy to do so as soon as possible before the new prices are introduced.

The situation is driven by fundamental changes in the technology industry. Spot prices for DRAM and NAND flash chips have risen more than 300% since September, according to analysts. The main driver is rush demand from AI-focused data centers, which is redistributing supply flows to the detriment of consumer electronics manufacturers.

Xiaomi, one of the first to react to the trend, has already adjusted the price of a number of models. For example, the starting price of the Xiaomi Pad 8 has increased from 2,199 to 2,299 yuan, while the base version of the Pad 8 Pro has gone up from 2,799 to 2,899 yuan. Prices for the entire Redmi Pad 2 lineup have increased by 200 yuan.

Honor is expected to announce specific changes in the near future. Experts predict that under cost pressure, other brands may also go for price hikes, feature cuts or supply chain optimization.
