Apple releases AirTag 2 with extended range and louder speaker

Apple has unveiled the second generation of its AirTag tracker, featuring upgraded capabilities to help you keep track of your belongings. The new model comes equipped with a second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, increased Bluetooth range, and a speaker that’s 50% louder. Although Apple doesn’t officially call it the AirTag 2, it’s referred to simply as the “new AirTag.”

Key improvements include:

  • Precision Finding range increased by 50% thanks to the new UWB chip
  • Built-in speaker volume doubled to better locate the tracker in bags and under furniture
  • Over 50 airlines have joined the Share Item Location feature to help return lost luggage

New ultra-wideband chip boosts precision finding

The updated AirTag is powered by a second-generation ultra-wideband chip—the same one Apple uses in the iPhone 17, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11. This chip enables Precision Finding to work up to 50% farther than with the original AirTag. The system guides users to lost items using haptic feedback, on-screen visual cues, and sound alerts.

The new Bluetooth chip also extends the tracker’s range. Apple has added Precision Finding support to the Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, and later models, allowing users to find items directly from their wrist without needing to pull out their iPhone.

Note that in countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, including Russia, the UWB module is disabled due to frequency restrictions.

Louder speaker and luggage return feature

The built-in speaker on the second-generation AirTag is now 50% louder. This makes it easier to locate the tracker when it’s hidden under sofas, deep inside backpacks, or in other hard-to-reach spots.

Apple has expanded the Share Item Location feature, enabling users to safely share AirTag location data with trusted contacts, including airline staff. More than 50 airlines have signed up for the program. Early data from SITA indicates a 26% reduction in baggage delays and a 90% decrease in permanently lost suitcases.

Privacy and sustainability

The tracker continues to use end-to-end encryption, regularly changes Bluetooth identifiers, and supports cross-platform alerts to protect against unwanted tracking. Apple emphasizes that location data remains private and is inaccessible even to the company itself.

The new AirTag is made with 85% recycled plastic and 100% recycled rare earth elements in its magnets. It’s compatible with all accessories designed for the first-generation AirTag.

Pricing remains unchanged: a single unit costs $29, while a four-pack is $99. The second-generation AirTag is available on Apple’s website and through the Apple Store app.
