Future Google Tensor chips may be developed in-house

Google is currently making many changes to its own Tensor line of chipsets for the Pixel family of devices. However, they are still based on Samsung Exynos. The company also uses Samsung’s foundries to produce these chips. According to industry sources, Google is working on restructuring this system to have more control over its custom chips.

The company is also using Samsung’s foundries to manufacture these chips.

The Tensor G3 is also known to be under development with Samsung. It is designed to power Pixel 8 phones. Most likely, it is already too late to change anything in this direction. Apparently, Google had plans to go entirely in-house to develop the Tensor G4 chip, intended for the Pixel 10 family. Allegedly, those plans also fell through, and the development of its own G4 chip, codenamed «Redondo» may not take place at all due to coordination problems between the U.S. and Indian teams and a large turnover of staff.

This means the company will likely settle on Samsung for the Tensor G4 generation and the Pixel 10 family. However, sources say that the Tensor G5 chipset, codenamed «Laguna» could be the first chipset to be completely self-developed. It is scheduled for release in 2025, and if the rumors are true, Google could turn to TSMC to produce the «Laguna» chip using a 3nm process.

Of course, at this point, this is just speculation. Nevertheless, completely in-house chip development could open up a whole new world of possibilities for building hardware to accelerate a host of advanced smartphone features and further drive innovation.
