Rumor: OLED models of Apple iPad Pro will be released in 2024

Some —iPhone and Watch —products are already using the technology and reaping its benefits, but the iPad and MacBook have yet to make it. Both products are rumored to be getting OLED soon, and according to a new report from research firm Omdia, the iPad could be the first.

To be more specific, Apple is reportedly on track to introduce OLED in the 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models in 2024. Production of these models will begin in the first quarter of next year. The source claims that the Apple giant plans to use low-temperature, multicrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels. This substrate is probably the pinnacle of current OLED technology, which is not surprising since Cupertino will likely use the highest-end OLEDs for its tablets. That makes sense, given that we’re talking about the Pro line. The current Mini LED LCD panels that Apple uses for its iPad Pro models are already some of the best in LCD displays. And in general, the company tends to invest heavily in the quality of its displays.
Even compared to the superior Mini LED displays, the move to OLED has many advantages. Perfect blacks for once and light control per pixel for superior contrast and HDR. There are also advantages in energy efficiency, and potentially the company could try to achieve even higher brightness levels. As for LTPO technology, it should allow a very dynamic adjustment of the display refresh rate for even greater energy savings.
Unfortunately, the report brings more than just good news. If you believe it, OLED panels will not appear in MacBook models by the end of 2024, as previously rumored. Instead, their release is rumored to be delayed to a later date and expected in 2027.
