Zelda and Nintendo Switch topped European gaming industry sales in May

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Nintendo Switch topped European gaming industry sales in May. According to GSD, software sales were up 33% over last year and hardware —40% over May 2022, helped by the release of the new Zelda game.
The research company’s data covers physical game sales in European markets and digital sales for most publishers except Nintendo and 505 Games. Based on only three weeks of physical sales, Tears of the Kingdom is already the third best-selling game of 2023 in Europe, behind only FIFA 23 and the leading Hogwarts Legacy. It is also the best-selling physical game of the year.

The Switch exclusive had more than 2.5 times the sales of Hogwarts Legacy in May. Warner’s game was the second best-selling game last month, with sales up 321 percent from April after its release on PS4 and Xbox One. The only new release to make the top 20 was Lego 2K Drive, which ranked 19th.
