DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3 may not be expected – and here’s why

Larian Studios CEO Sven Vinke has revealed why the team decided not to develop DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3 despite its resounding success. In an interview with GameSpot, he explained that the studio simply “doesn’t have the passion” for releasing add-ons, and that was a major factor in not working further on the project.
Winke said that while common sense suggested that the DLC would bring in a lot of revenue, the very idea of developing content without internal motivation didn’t inspire the team. Larian discussed releasing DLC, but after some deliberation decided: “Why do it if we don’t want to do it?”. Vinke emphasized that developer happiness is just as important as player satisfaction.

Larian has long since wrapped up work on Baldur’s Gate 3 and turned its full attention to two new projects based on its own intellectual property. The studio has also officially confirmed that it has no plans to release either expansions or a fourth installment in the series.
Despite this, Baldur’s Gate will still have a special place in the studio’s heart. Vinke said they’ll always be proud of the project, but it’s time to move on and create something of their own without being tied to the Dungeons & Dragons license.
