The Specs glasses are positioned as a “powerful wearable computer” built into a lightweight frame with clear lenses. Snap claims that the new product will be fully autonomous: unlike the previous, fifth version of Spectacles, which was designed exclusively for developers, Specs doesn’t require a separate processing module or external battery.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said the launch of Specs will be part of a “revolution in computing that brings together the digital and physical worlds”. He emphasized that advances in artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies are enabling new user scenarios and that Specs will be “the most advanced personal computer in the world.”

  • Integration with OpenAI and Google Gemini via Google Cloud
  • Depth Module API to convert LLM model data from 2D to 3D context for accurate georeferencing of augmented reality objects in space
  • API for speech recognition, supporting more than 40 languages in real time
  • Snap3D API for generating 3D objects inside lenses on the fly

In addition, Snap OS will get device fleet management tools, a demo mode for presenting Specs to guests, and Guided Navigation, a real-world navigation feature using augmented reality.

Specs will be Snap’s first mass-market AR device

The first versions of Spectacles, available only to developers, weren’t designed for a wide audience. The new Specs is Snap’s step toward the end consumer. Not only is the device lighter and more compact, but it also has a full operating system and support for advanced AI features, making it one of the most ambitious products in the AR device segment.
