Sonos adds TrueCinema mode and improved ANC to Ace headphones

Sonos has released a major software update for its Ace wireless headphones. The update includes the long-awaited TrueCinema spatial sound mode, as well as improvements to active noise cancellation and new features for collaborative TV watching.

Sonos has released a major software update for the Ace wireless headphones.

TrueCinema adapts sound to the room and the listener’s position

The main innovation is the introduction of TrueCinema mode, a spatial sound feature that was originally due late last year. It works similarly to Sonos’ TruePlay technology: the sound bar analyzes the acoustics of the room, and the microphones built into the headphones capture the user’s exact position. This creates a surround-sound experience, as if the speakers were positioned throughout the room.

TrueCinema uses data about the size and shape of the room, as well as sound reflections from walls and surfaces, to tailor 3D audio to specific listening environments. The result is sound that is more realistic and closer to traditional multi-channel speakers.

TV Audio Swap now works on two pairs of headphones simultaneously

The update also expands the capabilities of the TV Audio Swap feature, which allows audio from a Sonos soundbar to be streamed directly to Ace headphones for private listening. The feature was originally only supported with Sonos Arc and worked exclusively on iOS devices. Last August, support was expanded to the Beam and Ray models, as well as Android devices.

Sonos has now added the ability to connect two pairs of Ace headphones at the same time. That means two users will be able to watch TV on headphones at the same time without disturbing others.

Noise cancellation adapts to head shape and accessories

The update also improves the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system. It now adapts to the fit of the headphones on your head and compensates for sound leakage caused by, for example, hair, glasses or headgear that prevents the ear cushions from fitting snugly against your ears.

Sonos has also introduced support for high-quality audio on voice calls. The new SideTone feature adds the user’s voice to the audio stream when noise cancellation is enabled, making conversations sound more natural and comfortable.
