OpenWRT developers announced their own router – OpenWRT One

On the occasion of the OpenWRT anniversary, the firmware developers announced their intention to release the router under their own brand. The focus will be on open source software, an SSD slot, and an affordable price that won’t exceed $100 (8,900 rubles).

The new router will be called OpenWRT One and will be manufactured by Banana Pi, a company specializing in single-board computers. No production start date has been announced yet, and specifications are currently being confirmed. A full, but not final, list of specifications is already available for review at the link. Below are the expected key features of the new router:

  • Processor: MediaTek MT7981B;
  • Network chip: MediaTek MT7976C (2×2 2 2.4 GHz + 3×3/2×2 + zero-wait DFS 5 GHz);
  • RAM: 1GB (DDR4);
  • Built-in memory: 128MB (SPI NAND and 4MB SPI-NOR) + M.2 SSD slot (NVMe, PCIe gen 2 x1);
  • Ethernet: 1 x 2.5Gbps + 1 x 1Gbps;
  • USB: Type-C and Type-A ports;
  • Antenna connectors: 3 x MMCX.

The developers plan to donate a portion of the proceeds from the router’s sale to the Software Freedom Conservancy, an organization that provides free open source software for home and commercial infrastructure. It’s also been announced that the technical documentation and firmware for the new product will be published for free use (the license will be announced later).
