DJI has ended production of Phantom series drones: an era gone by

DJI has officially announced the end of the life cycle of its iconic Phantom series of drones. The last models – the Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Advanced – are fading into history, and there are no more new devices planned for the family.

The End of the Phantom Era

According to DJI’s support page, production of the last Phantom drones ended back in May 2018. Now, the company has announced that it will end technical support for the Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Advanced models as of June 1, 2025. Seven years of support is a pretty decent amount of time for any piece of technology.

Although DJI wasn’t the first company to create a quadcopter with a camera «out of the box» (Parrot AR Drone was already on sale in 2010), it was the Phantom series, which debuted in 2013, that made such devices mainstream.

Phantom quickly became a drone icon: its recognizable design with «pillow and legs» was often depicted even on signs banning flying in public places.

Why DJI no longer needs the Phantom

The form factor of consumer drones has changed a lot in recent years. Today, most DJI models have foldable designs for easy transportation. Phantom has been nicely replaced by other lines, from the professional Inspire to the compact Mavic, Air, Mini, and the recently introduced Flip.

In addition, the latest leaks from insiders Jasper Ellens and OsitaLV suggest that the Mavic 4 Pro and Mini 5 are expected to be released soon. This shows that DJI is focusing on developing other, more modern platforms.

What’s next

The company has not yet officially commented on the end of the Phantom series, but a comment is expected in the coming days.

One thing is clear: DJI is looking to the future, relying on new developments and a changing marketplace where compactness, mobility and integration with modern ecosystems are becoming more important than traditional design.
