OpenAI challenges Google: new search and shopping features in ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced a major update to ChatGPT that brings the platform even closer to a full-fledged search engine. ChatGPT will now provide more detailed shopping recommendations, as well as support auto-complete queries and show popular topics of the day.

How ChatGPT will help with shopping

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT will now be able to suggest specific products in categories such as fashion, cosmetics, home goods and electronics. In an example cited by The Verge, ChatGPT was asked: «best latte machine under $200 and for a small kitchen». In response, the AI generated three product cards with photos, names, prices, links to stores, and labels like «best budget choice» or «versatile design».

The company said ChatGPT’s recommendations remain independent – brands can’t pay to promote their products. As Adam Fry, head of search at OpenAI, clarified, reviews gathered from media and social networks play an important role in selecting recommendations. In addition, OpenAI doesn’t plan to make money from affiliate links – users won’t pay any commissions for clicks.

New Search Features in ChatGPT

  • Auto-addition of queries: similar to Google, ChatGPT will suggest options to continue your question.
  • Trends of the Day: you can now see a list of the most popular queries.
  • Improved Links: answers will contain multiple sources at once to confirm information.

These features make it even easier to use ChatGPT to find information and analyze relevant data.

How ChatGPT is evolving as a search platform

Internet search capabilities came to ChatGPT in the fall of 2023. Since then, AI has learned not only how to pick up products, but also how to process data from the web. OpenAI recently introduced the Operator feature, which allows ChatGPT to actually use a browser to search.

With this background, the new update seems like a logical development. OpenAI is clearly stepping up competition with traditional search engines like Google.
