Samsung may ditch Exynos chips in its home appliances in favor of Qualcomm

Samsung appears to be planning to expand the use of Snapdragon chips in its products, including not only its flagship Galaxy S25 series smartphones, but also home appliances. Reports from Korean publication SEDaily indicate that Samsung is considering replacing its Exynos chips with Snapdragon chips in consumer devices to improve their AI features and improve overall performance.

Snapdragon chips are also being considered by Samsung.

Transition to Snapdragon in consumer devices

Modern smart appliances like Samsung’s refrigerators already use built-in cameras and AI to recognize food and recommend recipes. The move to higher-performance chips like Snapdragon has the potential to make such features even more accurate and efficient. Exynos faces performance limitations that could prevent more complex AI functions from running, while Qualcomm offers power-efficient solutions with improved performance in neural network processing, which is better suited for «smart» appliances.

Yu Mi-young, vice president of Samsung’s home appliances division, previously said that the company is developing devices that support large-scale language models, which are expected to be introduced in 2025. Samsung is also working on its own neural network unit (NPU) to handle AI tasks, but using Snapdragon could help with the production difficulties Samsung faces in scaling up Exynos production.

Chips for the Galaxy S25

The production of the flagship Galaxy S25 lineup has also undergone a change. The Exynos 2500, which was originally planned for the S25, ran into issues with manufacturing defects and poor performance, prompting Samsung to consider using MediaTek’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400 for the S25 and S25 Plus models. The move to the Dimensity 9400, analysts say, could improve the performance and AI features of the smartphones.

Samsung is thus aiming to deliver high performance and quality AI features, which requires adaptation for both mobile and consumer devices.
