Apple is reportedly eyeing a foldable iPhone in flip format following Samsung

Apple isn’t just gearing up to launch its first foldable iPhone-it’s also exploring the possibility of a second foldable device in a flip-phone format, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip. That’s according to Bloomberg, citing insider sources, although the project is reportedly in its early stages and far from guaranteed.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, analyst Mark Gurman explains that Apple is investigating a concept for a compact, square-shaped device that could serve as a more affordable and portable alternative to the expected first foldable iPhone, which is tentatively slated for announcement near the end of 2026. This move suggests Apple’s confidence in the success of its foldable debut and a desire to quickly tap into potential market demand by offering users different foldable form factors.

Earlier reports from The Information also mentioned iPhone flip prototypes, though these never reached mass production. At the same time, Apple continues research on another front-a larger foldable device that unfolds more like a book. Gurman points out significant technical hurdles with this design, meaning its eventual release could be pushed back at least until 2029.

If Apple goes ahead with a flip-style foldable iPhone, it will be stepping into a competitive ring that includes market leader Samsung (with its Galaxy Z Flip line, including the upcoming seventh generation), Motorola’s revamped Razr, and various offerings from Chinese brands. The biggest challenges will remain ensuring hinge durability, protecting the display from damage, and maintaining usability despite the limited internal space. So far, Apple has not commented on these developments.
