TSMC raises chip prices – iPhone 17 could get more expensive

The increased cost of semiconductors will affect Apple’s entire lineup of devices.

The largest contract chip maker TSMC will raise the cost of semiconductor wafers (wafers) by 10% in 2025. This is reported by industry sources. The increase will affect all customers, including Apple, which remains the Taiwanese company’s largest customer.

The price increase will directly impact the cost of future iPhones and Apple Silicon Series chips – including the iPhone 17, iPad, MacBook and Mac Studio – which use processors designed by Apple and manufactured at TSMC.

Apple had previously considered raising prices on iPhone 17 models, and now the decision may be finalized. In parallel, in the United States remains uncertainty with customs duties, which adds risks. Recall, Apple previously imported products into the United States on an emergency basis before the new tariffs came into force, and also planned to move part of the production to India. However, according to media reports, these plans were opposed by the U.S. administration.

TSMC had been discussing the possibility of a price hike from the end of 2024 and has now officially started implementing it. This decision is driven not only by logistical and political risks, but also by the need to invest in the production of chips at 2nm and below.

It’s not just iPhones that are getting more expensive

According to the report, Apple’s M-series chips will also be hit by price increases, affecting MacBook Air, Pro laptops and Mac desktops. Tariff and manufacturing changes could result in price increases across Apple’s entire product portfolio

In contrast to Apple, Samsung has moved most of its production out of China in advance, which helps it reduce the impact of tariffs. However, the South Korean corporation has encountered problems in the production of Exynos chips, causing the Galaxy S25 to use only Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 (Elite). If Samsung doesn’t complete the development Exynos 2600 2nm process in time, it will also have to increase orders from TSMC – already at new prices. This could affect the Galaxy S26.
