Italian design studio Bertone has revived a 1960s concept car as a limited-edition model

The iconic Italian design studio Bertone, known for creating iconic cars such as the Lamborghini Miura and Fiat X1/9, is preparing to launch one of its 1960s concepts that combines the spirit of the era with modern technology.
History of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept
The first Runabout concept car was unveiled at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. The car, as envisioned by its creators, was inspired by space themes and looked like it was ready to go to the moon. Although the concept never went into production, its design inspired the Fiat X1/9. The Runabout, which resembled a lunar rover, attracted attention thanks to its original features, such as the huge headlights on an integrated safety cage.
Key design elements go into production
After brothers Jean-Franc and Mauro Ricci bought out Bertone in 2022, it was decided to turn the Runabout into a limited edition, with production expected by 2026. The modern version of the car retains many of the characteristic details of the original: the wedge-shaped profile, the safety cage, the dashboard with 360-degree view, the central compass and the unique steering wheel. The new version also adds doors to make it easier to access the car, and even includes lift-up headlights, though it’s not yet clear if they’ll be implemented in the final version.

V6 engine and manual transmission
The car is expected to get a 500-horsepower V6 from an unknown manufacturer, adding power and uniqueness to the Runabout. Judging from the renders, the car will likely be equipped with a manual transmission, which will add to its driving fun. Only a few examples will be produced, and the starting price starts at €350,000 (about $381,640).

The Future of Bertone Concept Revival
The Runabout will be the first in a new line of concept revivals from Bertone, and the company is already considering other legendary models. One candidate could be the famous Alfa Romeo Carabo, another wedge-shaped car created by Bertone. If it too were to make it to production, it could be one of the most impressive cars from the studio, inspired by the future and the aesthetics of 2077.
