Suzuki launches its first E Vitara electric car in partnership with Toyota

Suzuki, together with Toyota, is gearing up to enter the electric vehicle market with the new E Vitara compact crossover. This is the first electric car from Suzuki and production will begin next spring at Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant in India. The new car will go on sale in Europe, India and Japan sometime in the summer of 2024. A Toyota-branded model is also expected at the same time, which is likely to be based on the Urban SUV concept shown in 2023.

A joint project between the two auto giants
The collaboration between Suzuki and Toyota has already brought several joint models to the market, such as Toyota’s bZ4X electric car, which has been renamed the Subaru Solterra. However, both companies are still slow to integrate EV models into their lineups, focusing more on hybrid technology. Suzuki has previously announced plans to introduce several electric vehicles by 2030, but company president Toshihiro Suzuki says the strategy will be revised due to declining demand for EVs.

Characteristics of the E Vitara
E Vitara is equipped with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery with two capacity options – 49 and 60 kWh. The smaller battery is only available in the front-wheel drive version, while all-wheel drive variants come with a 60 kWh battery. Suzuki claims the range on a single charge can reach up to 400 kilometers (about 248 miles).

The E Vitara’s electric motor is rated at 135 kW, which is behind some competitors, such as the Chevrolet Bolt, which has a 150 kW motor. The E Vitara is also close in size to the Bolt, measuring 130mm shorter than Suzuki’s new crossover, which measures 4,275mm long.
Perspective and Market
No pricing information has been disclosed yet, and like many other compact electric cars, the E Vitara is not destined for the U.S. market. The car will come out in India, Japan, and Europe.
