Huawei announced HarmonyOS for PCs, challenging Windows and macOS

At the HarmonyOS Computer Technology and Ecosystem Communication Conference, the company unveiled its new operating system, which completes the transition to HarmonyOS for all consumer devices including phones, tablets, smart watches and displays.
HarmonyOS for PCs has been developed from the ground up and is based on the so-called “Harmony base,” which includes the Harmony kernel, the Ark engine, the StarShield security architecture and the ArkTS and ArkUI development tools. It is a standalone platform independent of Android or Windows, which is in line with Huawei’s strategy to build its own software in response to US trade restrictions.

Security and privacy were key aspects of the presentation. HarmonyOS for PCs includes real-name developer authentication, signature verification in the app store, and strict permissions for screen recording and screenshots. There’s also a super privacy mode that disables camera, microphone and location access.

Huawei implements chip-level whole-disk encryption, which ensures data protection even if the hard drive is removed without unlocking the screen.
When it comes to performance, the new “HarmonyOS Office” interface promises a seamless experience across devices with unified credentials and synchronization. It also includes the use of artificial intelligence to improve collaboration.
Corporate customers are also part of Huawei’s plans. The company will offer HarmonyOS-based business solutions with support for cloud platforms – Enterprise Application Center and Enterprise Business Deployment Cloud – as well as management and security tools.
Official release of HarmonyOS for PCs is scheduled for May 19. However, it remains to be seen how the system will work in practice, which devices will get support first, and whether third-party developers will be interested in the new platform in an already saturated software market.
