“Scrappy” from Microsoft Office 1997 has been revived as an AI assistant

An enthusiast under the nickname felixrieseberg has given a second life to the iconic Clippy from Microsoft Office 97, turning the old assistant into a full-fledged AI assistant. The iconic paperclip has stayed true to its appearance, retaining Microsoft’s nostalgic design from the ’90s.

The resurrected Clippy is now capable of running modern language models like Google Gemma 3, Microsoft Phi-4 Mini and Qwen3 in local mode. To run the updated Clippy, you need to use a special application that the developer has posted on Github.

According to the developer, the new version of Clippy is easy and quick to customize, as well as self-selects the best method to run the AI model. The virtual assistant can function without an Internet connection. Windows, macOS and Linux (RPM, x64/Debian, x64) operating systems are supported. A free download of the updated AI assistant is available on Github.
