OpenAI has launched a separate ChatGPT Translate service for text, speech and image translation

OpenAI has unveiled a standalone ChatGPT-based translation tool. While users have long used the main chatbot for translation, the ChatGPT Translate service is now available on its own web page, as spotted by Android Authority journalists.

OpenAI claims the new tool can translate text, voice requests and images into more than 50 languages in just a few seconds. It also features automatic language detection.

One of the most interesting features of ChatGPT Translate is the ability to customize the translation for different contexts and styles. As with other AI text tools, users can rewrite the translation with a single tap, making it «smoother», formal-business-like, understandable for children, or suitable for academic environments. The service’s page states that ChatGPT Translate takes tone, idioms and context into account.

The tool still looks less refined compared to Google Translate, which has been around for years and recently received a Gemini-based update with improved understanding of colloquialisms and slang. The desktop version of ChatGPT Translate does not yet have voice input support, although it is available in the mobile version. Despite claims of translating text on images, the service currently lacks the ability to upload the images themselves. There is also no support for translating websites, documents, or handwritten text.

Another major limitation is the lack of a standalone app. ChatGPT Translate works only through a web page, so offline translation is not yet possible. This makes the service of little use for travelers in regions without a stable internet connection. In addition, there is no real-time conversation translation feature right now. In comparison, Google’s Pixel 10 smartphones already support voice translation of phone calls.

The exact launch date for ChatGPT Translate remains unknown — OpenAI has made no official announcements. The Wayback Machine archive has a snapshot of the service’s November page that looks almost identical to the current version, which could indicate early testing of the tool.
