Google is adding AI Mode to its search engine

Google is changing its search engine again. Nearly a year after launching AI Overviews, the company has announced a new AI Mode that will add full artificial intelligence to search. This mode will use the Gemini 2.0 model, which is specially trained to gather and organize information from the Internet.

How will AI Mode work?

In contrast to AI Overviews, which gives brief AI answers in search results, AI Mode will be a full-fledged search query tool. Google claims that users themselves have been pushing the company to make this move – many already add the word “AI” to their queries to get more in-depth answers

When processing queries, Gemini 2.0 will utilize the «query fan-out» technique, allowing multiple searches to be run simultaneously. It will also utilize Google’s internal databases, including the Knowledge Graph, to supplement the information found on the web.

What’s the difference from standard search?

AI Mode will offer a new visual interface. For example, when comparing products, Google will be able to automatically generate tables of characteristics. Sources of information will now be displayed more prominently than in AI Overviews, with links to sites getting larger previews and images.

Another important new feature is that AI Mode will know when it’s best not to use AI. If the algorithm thinks it can’t provide a valid answer, it will simply show normal search results.

How do users react to AI Mode?

The testing showed that people use AI Mode differently than standard search. On average, queries became twice as long, and users asked clarifying questions more often. This confirms that AI Mode is useful for complex and multicomponent queries that require deep analysis.

When can I try it?”

AI Mode is already available to Google One AI Premium users on mobile devices and the desktop version. Other users will be able to take advantage of improved AI Overviews for now. Google is also expanding access: now even teens and unregistered users can see AI Overviews in search.

The company promises that AI Mode will continue to evolve and in the future will have more features and support for multimodal queries
