Apple is testing a new AI for Siri, but launch dates are still unknown

pple is continuing to develop an improved version of Siri based on large language models (LLMs) and is working on its own ChatGPT counterpart in parallel. This was reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Testing new Siri and ChatGPT analog models
According to Gurman, Apple is actively testing several AI models of varying complexity, ranging from 3 billion to 150 billion parameters. Models with 3 billion parameters are designed to run on-device, while the most powerful 150 billion-parameter version functions in the cloud and is comparable in capabilities to the latest versions of ChatGPT.

A tool called Playground is used for internal tests. Benchmarks show that Apple’s AI performance «comes close to the latest ChatGPT» releases. However, developers are concerned about the model’s tendency to generate misleading information. Gurman also said there are «philosophical differences» within the company regarding further development, but he did not disclose details.
Siri relaunch and Knowledge chatbot development
Apple has been working on a new architectural foundation for Siri at the company’s Zurich office for several years. The new AI is meant to replace the outdated hybrid architecture, which over the years has grown complex layers of functionality and reduces the voice assistant’s effectiveness.
In addition, Gurman said it is developing a standalone chatbot codenamed Knowledge. This one is designed to search and analyze information on the Internet and then provide answers to the user. Knowledge is supposed to be integrated into Siri, but the project has run into the same problems as the voice assistant update. The project is being overseen by Robbie Walker, who previously led the Siri team but has been removed from that role.

What’s next: competition with Google and Siri’s prospects
At WWDC in June, Apple is unlikely to unveil a roadmap for launching new AI features, given the criticism following the announcement of Apple Intelligence at last year’s conference. Those features were never launched on time.
In the meantime, Google plans to add Gemini to iOS 26 as an alternative to ChatGPT for Siri. Apple is also rumored to be in talks with Perplexity about possibly integrating their AI service as an additional option for Siri and search in Safari.
