Nintendo Switch’s Top 7 Best Platformers

Nintendo is a great console for spending time playing addictive platformers. Mario games have certainly set the standard for the genre, but now there are tons of other games that rival everyone’s favorite plumber.
Of course, with the genre being so popular, there are also plenty of platformers that are vastly inferior in quality. We’ve tried to include only the most solid platformers that are playable on Nintendo Switch.

Note that we’ve only included one game from each franchise on this list.
Super Mario Odyssey

Where else could we start but with the most iconic character of platformers and video games in general — Mario? Each location is filled with secrets, little interactions and fun ways to get around. The capture mechanic adds new layers of depth to each level depending on which creature you’re instilled with. Getting through the game to the end is easy enough, but there are hundreds of additional costumes to unlock to find even more reasons to return to the old worlds. As a result, we get a fun, uncomplicated game that’s a pleasure to spend some time playing.
So far, it’s not too difficult to play.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Donkey Kong hasn’t had a chance to prove himself in 3D yet, but he’s mastered the 2D space very well, at least on par with Mario. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze may be the best 2D platformer ever made thanks to its excellent level design. It’s one thing when the levels are visually appealing, but they all become perfect if the controls prove to be easy and intuitive. This time around you can control DK, Diddy, Dixie and Cranky, each of whom have their own movement options to experiment with. Unlike many other 2D platformers, Tropical Freeze isn’t afraid to increase the difficulty level. If you brave the bonus worlds, get ready for a real challenge.

Sonic Mania

The days of Sonic and Mario competing on different platforms are a thing of the past, and now the two are neighboring on Switch. Sonic has been experiencing a renaissance for a while now, but Sonic Mania started it and remains the best Sonic game on Switch. The game captures the style and speed of the original trilogy on the Genesis better than any other 2D game since those days. It has the pacing, multiple choice playthroughs, and catchy music that made the series special from the start. There are plenty of old classic stages in the game, but there are quite a few new ones as well.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

The first Yooka-Laylee game was a good attempt at being a sequel to Banjo-Kazooie, but failed to live up to its expectations. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair — is the sequel we didn’t expect, and seems to be a much better format for the characters.
There are plenty of fun and colorful stages, each with a large number of collectibles, but even the overworld is full of secrets and puzzles that make the whole world seem more alive. The peculiarity of the game is that it can be completed at any time. You can get to the final level when you’re ready, and for beating the other stages you’ll be given bees that will allow you to strike extra blows on the challenging final level.
Finally, you’ll be able to get to the final level when you’re ready.
Mega Man 11

In contrast to parts 9 and 10, Mega Man 11 doesn’t utilize the 8-bit style, instead opting for something new, more modern and cartoony. Whether you like the art style or not, the gameplay — is pure Mega Man. There’s a new set of robot masters that you can fight in any order, progressing through stages full of enemies and platforming challenges before battling a boss. The main change in this installment — the Double Gear system, which gives Mega Man two new abilities. One allows you to temporarily slow down time to jump or dodge attacks, while the other increases damage and allows you to fire two charged shots at the same time.

Antonblast

Vario may not seem like your average Mario, but his games — are nothing but traditional 2D platformers. Unfortunately, it’s been a while since there’s been a real Wario game, but Antonblast — is a worthy successor. This game is all about dynamics and explosive action, embodied in animation that reminds you of cartoons from the early 90s. You will pass through stages at breakneck speed, performing various moves, smashing through oddball enemies and collecting items while moving between the foreground and background. The variety of stages, mechanics and bosses is fantastic and very addictive.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

The PlayStation has had a few big mascot platformers in its time, but everyone has always sympathized with Spyro’s purple dragon. Spyro Reignited Trilogy remakes all three classic 3D platformers and makes them look like Pixar movies come to life. Spyro still controls beautifully, dashing and gliding through levels while collecting gems. The game strikes a great balance between platforming challenges, combat, and collectibles, making it easy and fun to play, and it only gets better as you progress through it.
