Galaxy S25 Edge became the thinnest smartphone of the series, but lost its curved screen

Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S25 Edge, an ultra-thin smartphone with a body thickness of just 5.8mm. The new product will go on sale this month, making it the thinnest model in the Galaxy S25 lineup. However, the use of the Edge name has raised questions among fans of the original concept associated with curved screens.

The Edge brand name has lost its original meaning

The Edge originally referred to a design feature – the curved display first introduced in the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014. Back then, the screen went on one side of the body and was used to display an additional panel with shortcuts, notifications, and widgets.

The idea was further developed in the Galaxy S6 Edge and S7 Edge series of devices, but for the sake of design rather than functionality. The curvature became minimal and the practicalities became limited. Later, Samsung phased out curved screens, and in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, they disappeared completely.

The Galaxy S6 Edge and S7 Edge series are the only ones to feature curved screens.

Galaxy S25 Edge, despite the name, has nothing to do with the side display concept. It’s just a thin and light variant of the main model. Fans of the Note Edge concept took this as the final point in Samsung’s history of unusual screens.

Why curved displays were abandoned

Although curved-edge screens looked spectacular, users faced a number of problems. Among them:

  • Image distortion at the edges of the screen.
  • Difficulties with installation of protective glasses.
  • Disturbance of video and gaming perception due to the shape of the display.

As a result, Samsung made the curve less pronounced with each generation until it was abandoned altogether.

Title without substance

The use of the Edge name to refer to a simply thin case has drawn criticism in the tech community. Fans feel the brand has been stripped of its original uniqueness. Instead of developing the side-screen concept, the company has moved on to safer and more mass-produced solutions.
