The new Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 has received major improvements in all key aspects: performance, power efficiency, gameplay, AI, camera and sound.

Transition to 4nm process

For the first time in the series, the chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process. Previously, Samsung’s 4nm technology and TSMC’s 6nm nodes were used.

Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 architecture

This is the first 6 series chip based on ARMv9. It includes one Cortex-A720 (2.3GHz), three A720 (2.2GHz) and four Cortex-A520 (1.8GHz) cores. Previous generations used ARMv8 (Cortex-A78/A55) cores. Despite the upgrade, the CPU performance increase was only 11% (as measured by Geekbench 5.2 single-thread). But the new Adreno GPU provides a 29% increase in graphics power. The chip is 12% more energy efficient.

AI and memory support

For the first time in the series, INT4 support has been added, allowing optimized AI models to run in limited memory. Qualcomm is developing AI for text summarization. The chip supports up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 (3,200 MHz) and LPDDR4X (2,133 MHz). UFS 3.1 is available for data storage.

Snapdragon 6 Gen 4: Display and Multimedia

The chip supports screens up to 1080p+ with a 144Hz refresh rate. The GPU supports Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (upscaling to 4K) and Adreno Frame Motion Engine (increasing frame rate without increasing power consumption). The camera supports triple 12-bit ISP, sensors up to 200 MP and 4K HDR video recording (30 fps). HDR10, HLG and 10-bit HEIF are supported.

Connectivity and Accessibility

The 5G modem supports sub-6GHz (4×4 MIMO) and mmWave (2×2 MIMO) with speeds up to 2.9 Gbps. There’s also Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX Adaptive and GPS with triple frequency navigation (L1/L5/L2).

The first Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 devices will be released by Realme, Oppo and Honor. India will be one of the first markets to get smartphones powered by this chip. The expected price is $100-$150.
