Sony hits the 20 billion image sensor sold mark

Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing, a company that makes image sensors for smartphone cameras, has announced that it has reached the milestone of 20 billion sensors shipped since it began production in the 1980s.
Smartphones as a growth engine
Yoshihiro Yamaguchi, the company’s president, told Nikkei Asia that mobile devices were the main reason for this result. In the past five years, from 2019 to 2024, the number of sensors shipped has doubled from 10 billion to 20 billion.

The growth in shipments has been accelerated by the increasing number of cameras in today’s smartphones. While dual cameras started appearing en masse in 2016-2017, today devices with four cameras have become commonplace, even in the budget segment.
At the same time, the number of cameras in today’s smartphones is growing.
Manufacturing capacity and new directions
Sony’s semiconductor division operates three plants located in Kumamoto, Nagasaki and Oita prefectures. The Nagasaki and Oita plants focus on developing image processors (ISPs) for mobile devices.
