Bobby Kotick thinks the new Guitar Hero could use AI

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has said that the growing prevalence of AI technology could lead to a new Guitar Hero game that uses it. Kotaku reports that Kotick was asked at a company-wide meeting last week what role AI could play in video game development.

Kotik cited Guitar Hero as a possible example of a game that could use AI technology. It’s unclear exactly how AI would help in the development of a new game in the franchise, but it could be similar to the 2007 iPod game Phase or the 2008 PC game Audiosurf, in which players could import their own music and the game would automatically generate music sheets for them.

According to another theory, AI could help highlight instrumental tracks from songs where no master recordings are available, allowing for an improvised version of the effect in Guitar Hero when the instrument stops playing when playing the wrong note.

Kotick’s comments — are not the only example of Activision’s intention to use AI to work with sound in games.
