Toyota has unveiled the first electric Hilux

Toyota has finally officially unveiled the ninth generation of the Hilux — one of the most famous and reliable pickup trucks in the world. The big news — is the arrival of an all-electric version of the Hilux BEV, part of a strategy «multipath» in which the company is betting not only on electric vehicles, but also on hybrid and conventional engines.

The lineup will include a 48-volt hybrid , gasoline and diesel versions, and a hydrogen Hilux with fuel cells, scheduled for 2028.

The electric version is built on the same rugged frame platform as the regular Hilux. A 59.2 kWh battery pack is installed under the floor, powering two electric motors — one on each axle. The front one produces 205 N-m, the rear one — 268.6 N-m. This arrangement provides permanent all-wheel drive.

Toyota emphasizes that the Hilux BEV retains the model’s legendary endurance: the battery is protected from impacts, rocks and water, and the fording depth is the same as the diesel version. Multi-Terrain Select helps the vehicle maintain grip on difficult surfaces by simulating a downshift.

When it comes to practicality, the pickup is rated for a payload of about 715 pounds and can tow up to 1,600 pounds. These figures are more modest than traditional competitors, which speaks to the target audience &#8212 corporate customers and city services that need an eco-friendly vehicle for light-duty work and deliveries.

Power reserve isn’t astounding either — approximately 240 kilometers on the WLTP cycle. When fully loaded or towing a trailer, that figure will obviously drop. Toyota promises «best-in-class charging capabilities» but specifics on power and charging times have yet to be disclosed.

Externally, the ninth-generation Hilux is styled «Tough and Agile». The electric version features a closed, aerodynamic front fascia without the traditional grille and unique wheel rims. All models will now be available in Double Cab bodywork only.

The interior is completely redesigned and inspired by the new Land Cruiser. Gone is the simple plastic panel — now inside is modern horizontal architecture with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a multimedia screen up to 12.3 inches. For the BEV, there’s a shift-by-wire electronic gear selector, wireless device charging, rear USB ports and a new footrest for access to the cargo area.

The Hilux also gets an expanded suite of Toyota T-Mate safety systems with an updated Toyota Safety Sense package. Among the new features — Proactive Driving Assist and Emergency Driving Stop System. The pickup truck supports «over-the-air» (OTA) updates.

The ninth-generation Hilux, including the BEV electric version, is scheduled for launch in December 2025.
