Meta will create a bracelet for PC control of muscle strength

Meta* is developing a wearable wristband that lets you control your computer using gestures and muscle activity. The device uses surface electromyography (sEMG) technology, which reads electrical muscle signals to interpret the user’s actions.

According to a publication in the journal Nature, the system is able to recognize the user’s intentions even before a physical movement is made. This opens up possibilities for cursor control, launching apps, and even writing «in the air».

The main purpose of the development — to help people with limited mobility. In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, Meta* is testing the device on patients with spinal cord injuries. According to Prof. Douglas Weber, even with complete paralysis of the arms, there is still enough muscle activity to work with the bracelet.

The technology provides a non-invasive alternative to neural interfaces like Ilon Musk’s Neuralink, which require surgery. Compared to EEG headsets, sEMG provides a more stable and accurate signal by directly recording muscle activity.

The project is currently in the research phase. Meta* does not give a timeline for a possible commercial launch, but emphasizes the technology’s potential to create new ways of human-machine interaction.

* Owned by Meta, the company is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and its activities are banned.
