The iPhone 17 could get a 120Hz screen, but there’s a nuance

Apple may update the refresh rate of displays in base iPhone models for the first time in a long time. The company was previously criticized for releasing the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus with 60Hz displays at a fairly high price point. However, the upcoming iPhone 17 and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, according to fresh rumors, will be able to offer a smoother display. But it’s not without its nuances.

For those not in the know, Apple has limited 120Hz displays to Pro models for generations. But now there’s word that the next-generation standard models – the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air – will also get 120Hz screens. At the same time, they won’t support the company’s proprietary ProMotion technology.

ProMotion is a variable refresh rate system from 1 to 120 Hz that is used in the Pro models. It is based on LTPO technology and allows the display to dynamically lower the frequency depending on the content, thus saving battery life. The important point is that this is a hardware feature, so the screens in the iPhone 17 and 17 Air will differ from the Pro versions not only in features, but also in architecture.

Nevertheless, simply adding 120Hz to the base models will already make them much more responsive and smoother to use. For many users, this will be a welcome improvement, especially for those who aren’t willing to pay for the Pro version. It’s important to realize that this information hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, and should be taken with a degree of caution.
