The Huawei Mate 70 Air could debut next week

After the recent release of Apple’s iPhone Air, Huawei is preparing to unveil its own competitor in the ultra-thin smartphone segment — the Mate 70 Air. The device has already appeared on carrier China Telecom’s website, and new leaks reveal details about its release date.

The device has already appeared on the website of carrier China Telecom, and new leaks reveal details about its release date.

According to popular insider Fixed Focus Digital, the Mate 70 Air will be officially announced as early as the end of this month. The device will have a body thickness of just 6 and a bit millimeters. Another source claims that the release is scheduled for October 29 — that is as early as Tuesday.

According to Fixed Focus Digital, Huawei will only offer the Mate 70 Air with support for physical SIM cards — there will be no eSIM version. This decision is in contrast to the iPhone Air, which exclusively supports eSIM, which has displeased a lot of users in China.

The reason is simple: eSIM prevalence in the region remains extremely low. In Taiwan, for example, the share of eSIM users does not exceed 1%. This is due to low consumer awareness and a complicated activation procedure that requires a visit to the operator’s office, payment of additional fees and personal registration. Huawei, apparently, decided to adapt the product to the real needs of the market.

The Mate 70 Air is rumored to get a large 6.9-inch display with an 18.8:9 aspect ratio. The main camera will be built on a 1/1.3-inch sensor and feature a lens with a «red maple» filter. The entire camera will be housed in the company’s trademark round XMAGE module, a characteristic of the company’s latest flagships.

The smartphone will be available in two versions: with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. The device will be running HarmonyOS 5.

Interestingly, Huawei has a rich history in creating ultra-thin smartphones. Back in 2012, the company launched the 6.68mm-thick Ascend P1 S. The P series continued this trend &#8212 the P6 (6.2mm) and P7 (6.5mm) were also record thin, until the lineup got a little more massive with the release of the P20, which is 7mm thick.
