HMD and Lava to release phones with broadcast TV support

Two manufacturers, HMD and Lava, are preparing to unveil unique mobile devices that support TV streaming without an internet or Wi-Fi connection. The new products will be showcased at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, which will be held May 1-4 in Mumbai, India.
The new devices will be unveiled at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, which will be held May 1-4 in Mumbai, India.
The underlying technology is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M), which allows devices to receive TV signals directly, without the use of cellular or wireless networks. Lava has confirmed that their phone will be equipped with an ultra-high frequency (UHF) antenna designed to receive terrestrial TV broadcasts.

The two devices are push-button phones aimed at the mass segment. They will feature a special SL3000 chip developed by India’s Saankhya Labs. Lava, for its part, added that it has worked on the device in collaboration with Tejas Networks. The phone will be powered by a MediaTek MT6261 processor, will have a 2,200mAh battery and a 2.8-inch screen.
Despite the small screen size, these phones may be in demand in remote areas that lack stable internet access. The ability to watch TV content for free without a connection makes them potentially useful for a wide range of users, especially in developing countries.
